Finding Your Way In – By Keri Setaro

Ok, yes I am a Yoga teacher, and yes, we should kind of make it look easy. But ya know what? It isn’t always that easy and it took us quite awhile to get to the place where it at least looked effortless. I come from a very non yogic life. My parents are all western medicine – in fact its their livelihood – and most of my friends are/ were very anti yoga. They all say things like “I went once and it just wasn’t for me”, “I hate all the religious stuff and the chanting, I mean I don’t want to be converted”, or “I just am not a yoga person”. Today I tell you this: there is always a way in..

When I first starting doing yoga over 17 years ago I wasn’t really that into it myself. It moved too slow, only old hippies were doing it and the music, if any, really sucked. It was like elevator music or weird pan flute versions of Beatles songs. So I kind of dropped in and out of it. Some part of it seemed good and interesting but I really couldn’t get into it. Then I moved to LA and took a class at the weirdest studio ever. It was actually owned by an ex- porn star, (so very LA) and it had a very irreverent feel to all the classes. I had never seen yoga that wasn’t all older hippies and incense and stuff and it blew my mind. The studio was just an empty warehouse, super beautiful, and all the teachers were young and they played music sometimes and it seemed very accessible. I found two teachers there that were very different from each other and both amazingly skilled. They became my anchors, the roots of my practice. I became hooked and I am ever grateful and thankful to them. Now I am not suggesting that the hippie incense way is bad and that this glossy young LA way is good, I am just saying that their is something for everyone. The same thing that brings you to your mat or the studio is not always the same thing all the time and all through your life. You change and so does your practice. It’s like anything else. If you went to a dentist and he was not nice to you or you didn’t have a transformative experience would you just say you hate teeth, and dentists!!!!?? Probably not right? Yoga is the same.

Maybe you have taken 1 class or even 2 and it just wasn’t your thing. Try other types of yoga, try all different teachers. A teacher that you click with makes all the difference in you loving a class and really feeling yoga take hold. Maybe you like music in your class, maybe you want the music loud and familiar, or maybe you want it soothing and in a different language, or maybe silence is your thing. The point is, get out there and try a bunch on for size before you decide its not for you. Then if you still think it’s not for you, ok, maybe not at this minute in your life, but maybe try again some time later in your journey. Hey I hated avocados until 2 years ago, can you imagine? Avocados are delicious.

Why do I say all of this? I hear so many people say the same things about yoga and then one day they say something different. I have honestly never found one of my friends that started saying they hate it not come to enjoy it once they found the right fit. Yes it’s true, yoga isn’t for everyone, but it is for quite a few. There is something to it. So go out there and try all that yoga on till ya find something that fits and always keep an open mind to your likes and styles changing. Your practice can be as changing as your haircuts and color, which for me is quite often.

Green Yoga on Montague Street

If you have visited our new Montague Street Yoga Studio you will have noticed our Green Wall. If you haven’t been it’s reason enough to visit, but of course we’d like you to stick around for a yoga class as well.

The wall was built by Eco Brooklyn, who also worked on the studio as a whole, they were responsible for the work at our Court Street location. The wall isn’t the only green aspect to the space the floors are made from salvaged and reclaimed mahogany.

But back to the wall, greenwalls have been around for millennia, remember the Hanging Wall of Babylon? They are making a large impact in the design and architecture world recently due to increased interest in green building and sustainability, which of course goes hand in hand with the ideals of a yoga practice.  We can go on about how pretty it is but it’s also practical!  None of us have to climb a ladder and water the garden bed because all the “grey water” from our sink gets piped and filtered to both the plants!

But aside from the living wall the studio space captures the light on Montague street so nicely and the warm wood makes it all the more inviting, which is why we want you to come and see and feel it for yourself!

If you need more of an incentive we have a series of workshops and Beginner’s series that will launch towards the end of June.

Kundalini Yoga Workshop

Let Your Sunshine Out!  Summer Solstice Celebration 2012!
with Jenna (Pavandeep) Zabala (Kaur)

Wednesday, June 20th

Join us for the 1st Summer Solstice of the Aquarian Age ~

Summer Solstice is the one day of the year when the Sun’s Energy is at its highest.  It is also the longest day of the year.  It is a time to reflect on our own lives through meditation.  Join us on this high vibrancy night as we begin with a powerful kriya to uncoil the Kundalini energy, awakening our chakras, and spreading the warmth of the Sun’s energy throughout our being.

Through meditation we will focus this light of beaming energy on the next page in our lives as we reconnect our commitment & focus on our own Greatness.

Be ready to open yourself to a new chapter of your own destiny as we open the space for new opportunities to grow.

“Keep Up”. Keep up, you will be kept up. “Keep Up” is not a small mantra. If you ever want to know who you are and where you are, just keep up. The world shall bow to you.”
~Yogi Bhajan

Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan has been called the “Yoga of Awareness.” It is a 5,000 year old authentic system of yoga exercise and meditation that promotes health, happiness and spiritual awareness.  Kundalini is a complete science that combines postures (asanas), movement, sound current (mantra), breath (pranayam) and meditation into powerful sets called kriyas.  It is designed to provide you with the experience of your higher consciousness through the raising of your Kundalini.  Practicing it allows you to develop intuition, strength, sensitivity, calmness, wisdom, radiance and grace.  It balances the glandular system, strengthens the nervous system, and enhances creative potential.  Kundalini Yoga is for everyone.  There is no need to be flexible or in great physical shape.  Happiness is your birthright!

Jenna (Pavandeep) Zabala (Kaur) was introduced to Kundalini Yoga by the recommendation of her Vinyasa teacher and since then has never looked back.  She discovered Kundalini Yoga at Golden Bridge Yoga NYC in 2007 and has since become a certified teacher through IKYTA with her training from Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa, Gurushabd, Tej Kaur, Harijiwan and Sat Siri.  She is also trained in the Radiant Child Yoga Program under the leadership of Shakta Khalsa.  When she found Kundalini Yoga she was immediately drawn in by the power of the practice and experienced a huge transformation and awakening.  She passionately believes that the kriyas and meditations can help walk you through your fears, release worries and stress.  The technology of Kundalini Yoga is a gift for healing the planet and for finding inner peace within our human experience.  You will develop your intuitive awareness, open your heart, and strengthen your commitment to your authentic Self.  Jenna has had the good fortune of studying Kundalini Yoga and Meditation in Rishikesh, India at the International Yoga Festival and at the Summer Solstice Celebration in Espanola, New Mexico. “If you cannot see God in all, you cannot see God at all.” ― Yogi Bhajan
Jenna is also a nationally and NYS Licensed Massage Therapist. As a graduate of The Swedish Institute in New York City she earned an Associate’s Degree in Occupational Studies and also holds a BFA in Dance from the City College of New York (CCNY). She has studied Ohashiatsu at the Ohashi Institute; Thai Yoga Bodywork with renowned instructors Jonas Westring and Michael Buck; and is a Nationally Certified Teacher of the Alexander Technique through the American Center for the Alexander Technique’s (ACAT) three-year training program and MELT Method Instructor. She resides in Brooklyn with her daschund Snuffles.  For more information please visit

New to Brooklyn: Raindrop Therapy Massage offered at Area Spa!

Raindrop Therapy Massage is an aromatherapy massage where a series of therapeutic grade essential oils are applied along the spine and paraspinal muscles which are then massaged in using specific strokes.

Raindrop Therapy uses a sequence of highly anti microbial essential oils synergestically combined to simultaneously kill toxins and bacteria trapped in between the spine and muscles. Nine different oils are dispensed like drops of rain approximately six inches above the back and worked into the spine and muscles using various techniques. These essential oils help to promote alignment of the spine and balance the flow of energy throughout the body. Raindrop Therapy Massage essential oils increase and align energy flow by opening or releasing blockages that prevent circulation.

Come and enjoy a Raindrop Massage and restore health and vitality to your whole being!
